Lets start this which is probably my last post for awhile with where I started the 19/08 after the police dropped me off I didn’t really know which route I was taking and ended up in a town called Pergine.
So after getting internet for the night I knew which roads to take as I had to avoid the SS47 for at least a day.
You get a lot of thinking time travelling the way I do lots of km’s, and for a few weeks now I’ve been thinking about something my good friend Rik said when I stayed with him in Belgium. Basically you can’t run forever and I came to the conclusion he was right so I had pretty much decided that I would get to Trieste get the ferry to Greece to complete this journey then get back to England and fix some things that have been wrong for a quite a few years. Kind of close out my past before I move on to my future. Especially patching things up with my mother who I have not spoken to for over 5 years now.
Now I had been talking to a friend in Italy who told me how cheap train travel was in Italy (I’d never found a working fare machine anywhere I looked) and with my funds getting lower when I reached Levico Terma and saw the sign pointing to the station I decided to see how much it would cost to Trieste from there.
The barman told me it would be about 20 euro’s (the ticket machine didn’t work here either) so I decided to accelerate my journey to Trieste by getting the train this would mean I have to change twice on the way.
During one of the transitions fate took a hand in events as I was getting off the train at Bassano Del Grappa the buckle on my left shoulder strap literally exploded making a shockingly loud noise and firing off into the train carriage. So now I could not adjust the strap at all, the rucksack just hangs and it’s pretty painful to walk with in all honesty.
I tied it up as best I could so I could switch trains and for me this settled it and for some reason I started looking to see if you could fly back to England from Trieste and you can by Ryan Air so I ended up booking a flight for tonight (20/08) which meant 1 night in Trieste where I would be meeting an online friend called Rok from Slovenia.
But what this also means is I would have to reduce the weight in the rucksack to under 20KG because Ryanair so I had a compartment on my last train to Trieste to myself and basically emptied my rucksack throwing away a full carrier bag of stuff I don’t need anymore, this included 2 spare laptop batteries, all my food any other odds and sods I could do without from now on.
And carried on to Trieste letting Rok know when I would arrive there.
Rok picked me up at Trieste station and we found a cheap place for me to stay the night so I could drop off my rucksack, then he took me to his home town of Koper in Slovenia for a few beers and a look around.
He is a great tour guide and has a real understanding and passion for the history of the town and Slovenia in general.
I had a great last night Koper is a lovely place and Rok is the perfect host and I will be sorry to end the journey here but I have to stop running from the things in my life and after completing this it’s time to stop.
Do I consider it a failure not getting to Greece no not really I have been through 9 countries (if you count England) met a loads of great people and made some new friends. I have seen things I have never seen before and visited places I would never of thought of going to.
So what next for me. Well it’s back to England tonight and visit Ely for a few days to say hello to friends there then off to Manchester to see my Son and Mother from there it’s a bit of an unknown but I kind of like that element in my life right now so I can live with it.
I will be making some more posts about the journey but no more photo’s as I have run out of disk space on wordpress 3gb of photo’s in like 12-13 weeks nice.
Thanks to you all.
